Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
