The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
