No fewer than 13 individuals perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
